Threat to Conserve The Gharial:Gavialis gangeticus & Mitigating Measures


The Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) is a critically endangered crocodilian species found in the Indian subcontinent, particularly in the rivers of India and Nepal. The conservation of gharials faces several threats, which contribute to their declining population. One of the primary threats to gharial conservation is the loss and degradation of their natural habitat. Human activities such as dam construction, sand mining, deforestation, and river channelization have resulted in the destruction of their breeding and basking sites. Industrial and domestic pollution, including the discharge of untreated sewage and agricultural runoff, has contaminated the rivers where gharials reside. Water pollution negatively affects the gharials' health, leading to reproductive problems and increased vulnerability to diseases. Gharials often get entangled in fishing nets or become victims of illegal fishing practices. Additionally, they are hunted for their skin, which is highly valued in the black market for its supposed medicinal properties and use in traditional crafts. Climate change impacts the gharial population through altering river flow patterns, water temperature, and food availability. These changes affect their nesting sites, breeding behavior, and prey availability, ultimately impacting their survival and reproductive success. The introduction of invasive species, such as predatory fish, has led to competition for resources and increased predation on gharial eggs and hatchlings. In Nepal, water loss can have specific effects on Gharial conservation due to the presence of important Gharial populations in the country. 

The Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) is a  critically endangered crocodile species found  in the rivers of Nepal, particularly in the Chitwan National Park and Bardia  National Park.  Water loss can lead to the  degradation of Gharial habitats in Nepal.  These crocodiles require suitable riverine  ecosystems with deep pools, sandy  riverbanks for nesting, and suitable basking  sites. If water levels decrease significantly,  the quality and availability of these habitats  can decline, making it challenging for Gharials to survive and reproduce. Female Gharials in Nepal lay their eggs in sandy riverbanks during the dry season when the water levels are lower. Water loss can reduce the availability of suitable nesting sites, affecting their breeding success. Changes in water levels may also impact temperature and moisture conditions in the nests, influencing hatchling survival rates. Water loss can alter the hydrology of rivers in Nepal, including reduced flow and shallower depths. These changes can impact the distribution and abundance of prey species that Gharials feed on, such as fish and crustaceans. If their primary food sources become scarce or shift to different areas due to water loss, it can negatively affect the feeding ecology of Gharials. In Nepal, human settlements and agricultural activities often coexist with Gharial habitats. Water loss may lead to increased competition for limited water resources between human communities and Gharials. This can result in conflicts and may lead to retaliatory killings or habitat destruction as a consequence. Gharials in Nepal undertake seasonal migrations, moving along rivers in search of suitable habitats and feeding grounds. Water loss can disrupt these natural migration patterns, obstructing their movement and potentially isolating populations. Fragmentation of habitat due to water loss can reduce gene flow between populations, negatively impacting their genetic diversity and long-term survival prospects. Gharials are known to undertake seasonal migrations, often moving upstream or downstream in search of suitable habitats and feeding grounds. Water loss can disrupt these natural migration patterns, obstructing their movement and potentially isolating populations. Fragmentation of habitat due to water loss can reduce gene flow between populations, negatively impacting their genetic diversity and long-term survival prospects.


Conservation efforts to protect the Gharial:  

 Conservation efforts to protect the  gharial in Nepal have been  implemented to safeguard the population of this critically  endangered species. The gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) is a unique and distinctive crocodilian species found in the rivers of the Indian subcontinent, including Nepal. The Government of Nepal, in collaboration with conservation organizations, has developed a comprehensive Gharial Conservation Action Plan. This plan outlines strategies and measures to ensure the survival and recovery of the  gharial population. Establishing protected areas and river corridors is crucial for the conservation of gharials. Nepal has designated specific areas as protected zones, such as the Bardia National Park, Chitwan National Park, and Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve, which provide suitable habitats for gharials. Engaging local communities in gharial conservation is vital for long-term success. Conservation organizations work closely with communities living near gharial habitats, conducting awareness programs, and involving them in conservation efforts. This includes educating local residents about the importance of the gharial and promoting sustainable fishing practices. Regular monitoring and research are essential for understanding gharial populations, their habitats, and threats they face. Researchers, along with government and non-governmental organizations, conduct surveys, population assessments, and research on gharial behavior to gather valuable data for conservation planning. Poaching is a significant threat to gharials, as their skin and body parts are illegally traded. Strengthening anti-poaching measures, including increased patrolling, intelligence gathering, and stricter law enforcement, helps deter poaching activities and protect gharials. Gharials rely on healthy river ecosystems for survival. Efforts are made to restore and rehabilitate degraded habitats, including riverbanks, sandbars, and nesting sites, to provide suitable conditions for gharials to breed and thrive. In certain cases, conservation organizations operate breeding centers to captive-breed gharials. These programs help increase gharial numbers and ensure genetic diversity. Once the young gharials reach a suitable size and age, they are released into protected areas to supplement the wild populations.


The various challenges to gharials, including habitat loss, river pollution, poaching, and unintentional entanglement in fishing nets, are the focus of these conservation efforts. The objective is to safeguard the gharial's future in Nepal and maintain its ecological value through cooperative activities involving the government, regional people, and conservation organizations.
